The review will follow the same layout as original manuscripts, and they will not exceed 500 and 1,000 words.). Usually reviews from books published in the same or previous year of the journal issue will be accepted.
9. Manuscript writing
Please do not impute volition to inanimate objects (for example, “this paper will analyze”, or “this article will analyse”, or any other inanimate object will engage in wilful behaviour). State your arguments boldly and directly. Follow the timeless advice of E.B. White and William Strunk in The Elements of Style: “Avoid tame, colorless, hesitating, noncommittal language”.
Under almost all circumstances, do not use the familiar first-person (‘I’, ‘we’, or ‘us’). For example, “Sport history remains a vibrant domain” is vastly preferable to “We argue that sport history remains a vibrant domain”, or worse, “This paper argues that sport history remains a vibrant domain”.
In addition, please note the following:
Dates and times
- 1880s, not 1880’s.
- twentieth century, not 20th century; hyphenate if used as an adjective, e.g., twentieth-century sport
- September 23, 1915, not 23 September 1915.
- 7.30am not 7.30 am.
Quotation marks (inverted commas):
- Use double inverted commas in the text, with single inverted commas within double inverted commas when a quotation is used within a quotation.
Latin terms
- et al. – with italics, followed by a full stop, meaning “and others” to signify more than three authors (for example, Smith et al.).
- Ibid. – with italics, followed by a full stop, and a comma, if a page number is indicated (for example, Ibid., 16).
- [sic] – with italics, inside a square bracket, to draw attention to an error in quoted material.
Numbers
- One to nine (in words), 10 to 1,000, and beyond (in numerals).
Ellipsis
- Insert a space before and after the three dots (“it was possible … this was”). There should be no punctuation before or after the ellipses.
10. Acknowledgements and/or funding
The author must indicate whether he/she has had a source of funding for the research that has resulted in the article. In particular, the funding agencies and the codes of the projects in the framework of which the research was carried out must be indicated. This information will be referenced in the published version of the article and in the journal metadata.
11. References
Materiales follows the Chicago Manual of Style (18th ed.). This style gives the possibility of presenting bibliographic information in two ways:
- Footnotes and final bibliography.
- Author-date style.
Authors should choose only one of these styles, without being able to combine both. Please note the following guidelines concerning both styles:
- The final bibliography will be in alphabetical order and will have a French indentation of 1 cm.
- In the final bibliography the first author appears with: Last name(s), First name and the following authors appear with First name Last name(s).
- Both in the text and in the final bibliography, the page numbers use only the changed part of the second number (correct: 26-7, 155-6, 347-58, incorrect: 26-27, 155-156, 347-358).
- The number of the journal should be entered: no.
- Whenever possible, it is necessary to indicate the DOI.
- In articles with more than three authors, only the first author should be cited followed by 'et al. (in the final bibliography the first seven authors will be referenced followed by 'et al.)
